Who is God the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit may be the most confusing part of the Trinity to understand. He is not the Father and He is not Jesus who came down to earth to sacrifice Himself for us. The Holy Spirit is our Helper. After Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and ascended into Heaven, the Holy Spirit was sent to be our Helper and to dwell inside anyone who believes.

John 14:26 says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” In this verse, Jesus is talking to His disciples and telling them about what will happen once He leaves them. At this point in time, the disciples were still unsure what Jesus meant and did not understand why He had to leave. Later on, in Acts, we see that the Holy Spirit brought the words of Jesus back to them and they proclaimed the truth of who He is to the ends of the earth. The Spirit also gave them many abilities in order to spread the Good News of who Jesus is that they never would have had on their own.

Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” This verse is just one example of how the Holy Spirit helps us. He is always there to help us draw near to the Father.

The disciples were given the gift of tongues (the ability to speak other languages that they did not understand) when they went out and spread the Gospel. They were also given the power to heal people in the name of Jesus. These gifts were from the Holy Spirit, the Helper, inside them.

We also have the Holy Spirit inside us if we believe and are saved. He does not always give us the gift of tongues or the power to heal people in the name of Jesus these days in the same way He did with the apostles, but He does help us and He guides us in our daily lives.

Even though He may be the most confusing part of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit plays just as important of a role as the Father and Jesus. Have you seen the Holy Spirit guiding you in your everyday life?

To end this miniseries on the Trinity, I would like to share the simple way that my parents explained the concept to their preschool Sunday school class one more time.

God the Father: our Father in Heaven who loves us.

God the Son: Jesus, God who died on the cross for our sins.

God the Holy Spirit: God who lives inside of us and helps us.
